As something you wear day in and day out, your engagement ring should fit comfortably, without feeling too loose or too tight. With that said, ring spinning is more common than you may think. Spinning describes the feeling that your ring is loose, without being so loose that it falls off. While you may find yourself spinning it around absently, it’s best to get it sorted so that the fit is just right.
In this guide, we’re sharing some of the reasons your engagement ring may be spinning on your finger. We’re also sharing a tip or two on how to stop it from happening.
Why Engagement Rings Spin (And How to Stop It Happening)
Some of the main reasons that your engagement ring is spinning include the following:
Your ring is too loose
The first, and most obvious reason, is that the ring is too loose. This is a common issue that happens when partners choose rings on their own without knowing your ring size. Surprise proposals are undeniably romantic. They may not always be practical if the ring isn’t something you have had sized beforehand.
This can be easily prevented by proposing with a temporary ring or no ring, then choosing a ring together. Or your partner can choose a style that is easy to resize to fit your finger. Just make sure you get it sized as early as possible. If the ring is too loose, it may end up falling off and not just spinning.
Your ring design is top-heavy
Top-heavy designs can include rings with very large stones and very fine bands, settings that do not balance well with the overall design, too many layers, or anything else that throws off the gravity of the ring. If you have a stacked design with a wedding ring that fits properly, a spinning engagement ring can lead to you pushing the ring in place frequently, which can put pressure on the design.
To prevent this, remember to choose rings that are balanced. If you’re going for a delicate band, choose smaller stones and subtle details. If the stone is larger, choose a thicker band. Bezel or flush-set designs can add more stability, while floating or prong settings with larger stones and a fine band can easily put the ring out of balance.
Your ring doesn’t fit your finger shape
Besides the size of the ring, you’ll also need to think about the shape of your finger. If you have thin fingers, your middle knuckle may often be larger than the base of your finger. This means that the ring will feel snug when it slips on, but then feel loose once it’s on your finger. If your fingers and knuckles are the same width, there is less chance of spinning. Thicker fingers are less likely to experience ring spinning.
The simplest solution to this is to choose a jeweller who can size your custom-designed ring according to your specific finger. A good jeweller will also understand that rings may feel looser or tighter depending on the weather or other conditions, with heat causing fingers to swell and cold causing fingers to shrink.
