GIA Certified Asscher Cut Diamonds
When purchasing an assher-cut diamond at Cape Diamonds, as for any other diamond, you will receive a GIA certificate. A unique number is lasered onto the girdle of your asscher diamond, which matches the diamond number on your certificate. The GIA certificate also indicates the specific elements to your diamond including its carat weight, colour grade and clarity grade.
The Asscher Cut Diamond
The Asscher diamond is a perfectly cut square shape, emphasising its elegant symmetry and geometric precision. The deep step-cut facets, and softer corners is what makes this cut different to the square, princess cut diamond. Step-cut refers to the arrangement of the facets which is in a step-like manner, creating a “hall-of-mirrors” effect.
Asscher Cut Diamond Size Comparison
When comparing the asscher cut diamond to a round cut diamond based on a one carat size, the round diamond will appear slightly larger due to its brilliant faceting pattern, while the asscher’s square shape and step-cut faceting will provide more depth than the round diamond. The costs of an asscher cut diamond is significantly lower than the round diamond due to its large table surface, making it easier to see small defects.
Asscher-Cut Diamond Ratio
The ideal ratio for an asscher-cut diamond is 1.00 to 1.05, which indicates a nearly perfect square shape. Some asscher-cut diamonds might appear slightly elongated with a ratio of 1.06 to 1.10. Thus, the ratio has an effect on the appearance of the diamond, which can also be of personal preference to suit your style. However, a balanced ratio will enhance the hall-of-mirrors effect, giving the asscher diamond its unique look.
Asscher Cut Imperfections
Due to the asscher-cut diamond’s large, open facets inclusions are more visible. Small flaws such as clouds, crystals and feathers are more noticeable than your highly faceted cuts. To avoid large imperfections, make sure to purchase a higher clarity grade asscher diamond. Vs1 and VS2 are preferred clarity grades for an asscher cut diamond.
Table Percentage
Asscher diamond table percentage. The table percentage is the width of the top ‘table’ of a diamond (the flat side on top) expressed as a percentage of the total width of the stone. For the Asscher cut, an ideal table percentage would be 60% to 68% since this range will help to enhance the diamond’s light performance and overall sparkle.
Depth Percentage
The depth percentage is the depth of the diamond as a percentage of the width of the stone. The ideal depth percentage for an asscher-cut diamond would be similar to its table percentage, 60%-68%. This contributes to the geometric symmetry of the diamond and balance in proportions. However, if the diamond’s depth is too high in percentage it might appear smaller than its carat weight.
Polish and Symmetry
Polish and symmetry is very important for an asscher cut diamond since it is considered one of the diamonds where imperfections are more visible due to its specific cut. GIA laboratories grade the diamond on its flaws under x10 magnification. If there are many noticable flaws, the diamond will receive a low grading for polish. Asscher cut diamonds require precision in cutting and symmetry to acquire its unique look.
Facets
The amount of facets will depend on the number of steps that are evident on the diamond. Asscher cut diamonds contains 57-58 facets, with 25 of these in the crown, 8 on the girdle and 24 to 32 on the pavilion. Cape diamonds make sure to stock asscher cut diamonds that contain at least 60 facets to ensure that
Colour
White is usually seen as the most desirable colour for diamonds. It’s the rarest and most expensive. As you get further away from white, most diamonds tend to pick up ‘warmer’ yellow tones. Sharp points on diamonds concentrate the colour, making it easier to pick up these warmer tones. It is important to stay in the higher colour grade when choosing an asscher cut diamond to avoid the ‘warmer’ tone.

Whether you are looking for a simplistic look or something more sparkly, the asscher cut diamond will provide you with everything you are looking for.
